The Plattsburgh Community Garden Group was established in 2009 to create allotment style community gardens in and around the City of Plattsburgh that; build community, provide an enjoyable and safe place to grow crops, gather as friends, and learn the techniques of successful gardening. In its first year, the Plattsbugh Community Garden Group established our first at Melissa Penfield Park, where we now provide up to forty-four gardeners with access to water, soil amendments, community tools, and some assistance with soil preparation and garden planning in exchange for a modest fee.
In 2011 we expanded to an additional garden location: The Mary Hulbert Memorial Community Garden on land kindly made available to us by Hulbert Bros. Supply on Rt 3 across from Wendy's and Walmart. All told, the Plattsburgh Community Garden Group hopes to make available over 6,000 square feet of gardens on over 60 plots.
Even the smallest garden plot can provide a family with an ample supply of fresh, locally grown vegetables; lowering family food costs, providing healthier and tastier meals and snacks and, reducing the carbon emissions needed transport food to the table.
Garden Notes- Teaching Garden Curriculum and Beginners Growing Guides Available: The Teaching Garden Curriculum was created as part of the "Establishing Organic Teaching Gardens Project" funded by the Towards Sustainability Foundation. Developed by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Clinton County, NY and coordinated by Anne Lenox Barlow, Horticulture Educator, Assisted by Alexander Scharf, Intern in 2010 - Feel free to use it to establish your own teaching garden!. The extension is offering some March Classes and a big workshop on April 9th... check with them at the Cornell Cooperative Extension or 518.561.7450

Most plots are 100 Square feet in "raised beds" 4' wide x 25' long. Plot usage fee is $25 for the season. Fee is paid for use of land, access to water and an adequate supply of organic soil amendement.
Special Thanks to our friends at 2011 SUNY Plattsburgh Upward Bound for their help in building a new compost containment fence and other projects around the gardens.
